Qba Janicki
Qba Janicki is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and cultural organizer emerging from the artistic community centered around the legendary MÓZG club in Bydgoszcz, Poland. For nearly two decades, he has remained an active figure in improvised and experimental music, composition, music production, and the development of independent cultural infrastructure.
His artistic practice unfolds at the intersection of composition and performance. Moving fluidly between open forms and composed structures, Janicki treats rhythm, energy, and the organization of time as fundamental tools for constructing musical narratives. Alongside his compositional work, he develops projects spanning electronic music, collaborative ensembles, and formats situated between concert performance, sound art, and studio production.
For more than a decade, he was a member of the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet. He currently performs as a solo artist and is involved in several ongoing projects, including Malediwy, T’ien Lai, Marek Pospieszalski Oktet, AJAKS, and a duo with Grischa Lichtenberger. He has also collaborated with artists representing diverse fields of contemporary music, including Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, Mats Gustafsson, Toshinori Kondo, Jerzy Mazzoll, and Teoniki Rożynek.
An important part of his work is composing music for theatre, alongside developing long-term institutional and community-based cultural initiatives. He has worked with theatre makers and companies including Krzysztof Garbaczewski, HERTZ HAUS, Maciej Podstawny, Ramona Nagabczyńska, and Paweł Łysak. As Vice President of the MÓZG Foundation and the Grupa Sokołowska Association, he co-organizes events dedicated to experimental and interdisciplinary artistic practices, fostering initiatives that connect music, contemporary art, and local forms of cultural participation
